Indian journalist Ravish Kumar has been chosen for the prestigious Raman Magsaysay Awards 2019 for his outstanding contributions to the Indian journalism. Mr. Kumar, who is well known for his brave journalism specifically when the mainstream media has lost its Morales and ideologies, was born in Motihari, Bihar on December 5, 1974. He has been vocal against the Indian government over several issues like healthcare, education, farmer's suicide, rape, mob lynching, GDP growth rate, various global data etc., unlike most of the news editors and anchors in India. Earlier he has received the Prestigious Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award twice in the Journalist of the Year category in 2013 as well as in 2017. Now, he has become the fifth Indian journalist to be awarded the Raman Magsaysay Award, which is also known as Asian Nobel prize.
In 1961, renowned investigative journalist Amitabha Chowdhury became the first Indian journalist to win the award. In 1975, Boobli George Verghese won the award for his outstanding contributions to the field of journalism. Then in 1982, veteran journalist Arun Shourie won the Raman Magsaysay Award for his outstanding criticism against the government. In 2007, experienced journalist Palagummi Sainath won the award for his excellent services to the Indian media. So, after 12 years an again an Indian journalist has won the Award for becoming the Voice for the voiceless.
